The concentrations of heavy metals namely; Manganese, Cadmium, Lead, Mercury and Arsenic (Mn, Cd, Pb, Hg and As) including Iron (Fe), were determined in catfish and tilapia samples from Densu River at Weija in 2012. The fish Muscles were carefully dissected for digestion and the levels of heavy metals were determined using Microwave Milestones Ethos 900 double beam Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Concentrations of heavy metals in the fish samples analyzed in descending order of Fe > Mn > Cd were detected, but, the rest (Pb, Hg and As) were not detected. The highest concentration of Cadmium (0.808mg/kg) was detected in the muscles of Catfish while the lowest value (0.129mg/kg) in Tilapia. The lowest concentration of Mn (0.78mg/L) and Iron (44mg/L) were detected in catfish whereas the highest Mn = 1.74mg/L, Fe = 53mg/L were in the Tilapia samples. Cadmium and Iron accumulated by the two fish species exceeded the maximum permissible limits prescribed by the World Health Organization guideline well as the Food and Agriculture Organization standard. Higher levels of heavy metals accumulated by the fishes might be due to increase in the agricultural influx waters, domestic wastes and some anthropogenic activities which merit further investigation.

Mr. Tiimub, Benjamin Makimilua, is a Lecturer of Environmental Science with special interest in Microbiology at the Department of Environmental Health and Sanitation Education in Faculty of Science and Environment at the University of Education, Winneba with. His teaching and research activities focus on environmental impact assessment, domestic and public cleansing, food and water quality management, community mobilization and health education, pollution control and infectious pathogen and pest control. He ontained a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Science in 2007 from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Renewable Natural Resources from the University for Development Studies, Tamale in Ghana in 2002. He worked with the Plantations Development Limited, a cotton production company in Ghana as a ginnery waste manager, laboratory technician and cotton production supervisor in 2003 and was a science and mathematics teacher at Saint Paul’s Lutheran School in Accra in 2004.
He worked with the Research Triangle Institute International in Tamale as District Operations Manager for the indoor residual sprayings exercise on malaria control in 2007-2008 and at the Head Office of the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from 2008-2009 as a Programme Officer at the Department of Manufacturing Industries where he contributed in characterizing and quantifying industrial wastes to generate an industrial profile for the southern sector of Ghana. He joined the University of Education Winneba in 2009 as a Lecturer where he does teaching, academic counseling, coordination of departmental examinations and researching in environmental sciences, public health planning, domestic and public cleansing, meteorology studies, energy use and conservation whilst supervising over 40 student’s project works/dissertations annually. He has served the University in the capacity of Departmental Representative on Faculty Boards/Examiners Board, participated in new academic programme course outline development for accreditation. He has been a supervisor for on campus /off campus teaching practices and community outreach/field attachment programmes. He is a member of the Ghana Science Association.
He won a Scholarly Grant of US $ 800 from the United Nations Children’s Fund to undertake a research work on groundwater quality monitoring in the Bawku East District of Ghana leading to the compilation of his Masters Thesis in 2006 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi. Mr. Tiimub Benjamin has been a consultant, serving as the first Ashanti Regional Environmental Sanitation Supervisor to Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the largest private waste management company in Ghana where he trained over 300 Community Sanitation Guards, developed daily operational time sheets and coordinated the distribution of bicycles and other logistics for environmental sanitation field operations and pioneered the formation and launching of Zoomkids Sanitation Clubs in pilot schools in the Ashanti Region. He has been the main author of about 12 publications in reputable international journals and conferences.
